Mok Chek Hou : Govt urged to review proposed high toll rate for EDL

15/03/2012 JOHOR BARU: The Government should review the proposed RM6.20 toll rate for the Eastern Dispersal Link (EDL).

Stulang assemblyman Mok Chek Hou said it was too high for motorists using the 8.1km highway.

“They should look into ways to reduce the toll rate. If it is too high, people will continue to use the trunk road,” he said.

Mok pointed out that there were many Malaysians commuting to Singapore for work daily via the highway.

“I hope the Government can revise the rate by taking into account the volume of vehicles or even the duration of the concession,” he said.

It was previously reported that the EDL, which is almost completed, would require motorists travelling to Singapore via the Johor Causeway to pay about five times more than the present RM2.90 paid for both ways to PLUS Bhd.

Motorists would have to pay the proposed RM6.20 toll charge if they enter the Customs, Immigration and Quarantine (CIQ) Complex using routes other than the EDL since the toll collection would be done within the CIQ. A trip to and from Singapore would mean RM15.30 for the journey.

Malaysian Indian Business Association president P. Sivakumar said it was the Government’s duty to provide good roads for the people and it should consider buying over the project from MRCB Bhd if it was unwilling to reduce the toll rate.
