Najib: No toll on Johor's EDL

25/09/2012 THE Government has assured that it will not impose toll on the Eastern Dispersal Link (EDL) in Johor Baru after it takes over the expressway from the concessionaire, Malaysian Resources Corporation Berhad (MRCB).

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said the proposed Government takeover of the EDL was still at the negotiation stage.

“Nevertheless, the interests of all — the people, the loan provider, the concessionaire and the Government — will be safeguarded in finalising any proposal,” he told Loke Siew Fook (DAP-Rasah) in a written reply.

Loke had enquired about the cost of the Government takeover of the EDL from MRCB, and the rate of the toll to be imposed.

Earlier in the House, Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk S.K. Devamany told Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim (PKR-Bandar Tun Razak) the construction of the Sungai Besi-Ulu Kelang Elevated Expressway (SUKE) will solve traffic congestion on several major highways in the Klang Valley.

He said SUKE will become an alternative route and reduce congestion on the Middle Ring Road 2 (MRR2), especially in Ulu Kelang, Ampang and Pandan Indah.

“SUKE will also create a new route on the Grand Saga Expressway towards Kuala Lumpur now accessible only via Jalan Cheras,” he said.

Abdul Khalid, who is also Selangor Mentri Besar, asked how the construction of SUKE could solve traffic congestion in the Klang Valley.

Devamany said SUKE will serve as an effective traffic dispersal system as it provides a link between the city centre and eastern Klang Valley via Ampang-Kuala Lumpur Elevated Expressway (AKLEH).

It will also link eastern and northern Klang Valley via Duta-Ulu Klang Elevated Expressway (DUKE).

“It also connects and complements DUKE, AKLEH, Grand Saga Expressway, Besraya Expressway, Kuala Lumpur-Seremban Express-way and the Shah Alam Express-way.”
