Mok Chek Hou's concern on fire hazard over illegal dormitories

05/01/2011 Fire and Rescue Department director-general Datuk Wan Mohd Nor Ibrahim said that many of the illegal dorms do not have proper fire fighting equipment or even emergency exits. He was commenting on The Star report of a fire in a double-storey house in Kim Teck Park in Johor Baru which had been turned into an illegal dormitory with 21 rooms. The occupants paid about RM340 per month or RM20 per day in rental for the “rooms” which are partitioned by plywood and equipped with a fan and mattress. Some rooms had cooking facilities. Stulang assemblyman Mok Chek Hou when contacted said there were many such houses not just in Johor Baru but other major cities. “I have brought up such cases to the Johor Baru City Council (MPJB) in the past,” he said, urging the public to contact the council if they knew of such premises.
