Mok Chek Hou Presenting Malaysia Book of Record Certificate

22/09/2010 A group of ballerinas from the JB Ballet Academy made it into the pages of the Malaysia Book of Records by standing on the tip of their feet for a minute. They had successfully performed a ‘one pointe’ for the record attempt held in conjunction with Malaysia Day. Ballet teacher Julia Lee said some 84 students and six ballet instructors participated in the historic event. She added that they were elated as they managed to perform such a difficult step as a group. “This is the toughest move in ballet as we have to balance our whole weight on our ankle.  We only selected students aged 12 and above as their bones are not fragile and theywould be able to perform the move,” she said. The move, said Julia, was even more difficult as the tip of ballet shoes are made of wood. “Before we perform the ‘one pointe’, we have to conduct warm up exercise to make sure no one gets injured doing this move,” she said. The ballerinas, had practised for several months to ensure they were ready to perform the move. She added their next attempt is to break the world record held by 231 ballerinas in New York who performed the ‘one pointe’ for one minute and seven seconds. “We hope that other ballet academies throughout Malaysia will contact us and join us in breaking the world record,” she said. In relation to the event, Malaysia Book of Records research journalist Leona Paul said that this was the first time a large group of dancers have performed the ‘one pointe’.
